Carved into 17th- and early 18th-century gravestones, the Death’s Head served as a stark reminder of mortality in a time when death was an ever-present part of life. The wings represented the soul’s journey from the earthly world into the afterlife—a fitting symbol for a city where the past never feels very far away.
